Wades Beach

Family-Friendly Beach on Shelter Island with Gentle Waves

Why Wades Beach is Perfect for Families

Wades Beach stands out as Shelter Island’s premier family destination, offering gentle waves, shallow swimming areas, and thoughtfully designed amenities that make a beach day with children stress-free and fun. Located at 114 S Midway Road on the western side of the island, this 300-foot stretch of white sand overlooks Shelter Island Sound and provides everything families need for a safe, enjoyable day in the sun.

Location & Setting

Positioned on Shelter Island Sound, Wades Beach benefits from protected waters and beautiful vistas. The beach is easily accessible via S Midway Road and is centrally located for visitors coming from either the North or South Ferry terminals. The peaceful setting makes it a favorite escape from the busier Crescent Beach, particularly for families seeking a more intimate experience.

Swimming & Water Conditions

The hallmark of Wades Beach is its shallow, gentle waters—ideal for young children and first-time swimmers. The beach slopes gradually, allowing kids to wade out and play safely while parents supervise from nearby. During summer months, lifeguards are stationed on the beach from 10am to 5pm, providing an extra layer of safety and peace of mind. The calm bay waters rarely have significant waves, making this the island’s safest swimming option for families with small children.

Facilities & Accessibility

Wades Beach features an open-air pavilion that’s fully ADA-accessible, ensuring all visitors can enjoy the facilities regardless of mobility challenges. Restrooms are available on-site, and picnic tables provide convenient spots for lunch and snacks. The well-maintained infrastructure reflects the town’s commitment to welcoming visitors of all abilities and family compositions.

Exploring Nearby Dickerson Creek

A short walk north along the beach brings you to Dickerson Creek, where a entirely different adventure awaits. This tidal creek is famous for its thriving population of fiddler crabs—a favorite discovery for curious children exploring tide pools. The creek is also a popular spot for clamming (with proper permits), offering a hands-on way to connect with the island’s natural heritage. Low tide is the best time to explore the creek and hunt for crabs and other marine life.

Parking & Permit Information

Like Crescent Beach, Wades Beach requires a parking permit from May 15 through September 15. The good news: daily permits for Wades Beach are available and affordable at $25 per day, with a maximum of 10 daily permits issued. This makes it an excellent choice for day-trippers who don’t want to commit to a weekly or seasonal pass. Residents with Shelter Island addresses receive free permits. Get your parking permit →

Best Times to Visit

Wades Beach is most welcoming from June through August when lifeguards are on duty and the water is warmest. The calm conditions make it safe year-round for wading and exploring, but swimming is most enjoyable during the warmer months. Arriving early in the day ensures parking availability and a less crowded beach experience.

Dining & Services

While Wades Beach itself doesn’t have food vendors, nearby Shelter Island Heights and the central island area offer restaurants, cafes, and markets where you can grab provisions before heading to the beach. Many families pack a picnic and take advantage of the picnic tables and pavilion—it’s a great way to keep lunch costs down while enjoying quality family time.

What to Bring

For a successful family day at Wades Beach, bring sunscreen, towels, water shoes (helpful on the sandy bottom), snacks, and plenty of water. If you’re planning to explore Dickerson Creek, bring a small bucket for collecting shells and observing fiddler crabs, and check tide tables to plan your outing. Binoculars are also wonderful for bird watching—Shelter Island’s waterfront attracts numerous coastal bird species.
