Fresh Pond
Shelter Island's 15-Acre Freshwater Fishing & Nature Spot
About Fresh Pond
Fresh Pond is a 15-acre freshwater pond on Shelter Island that offers something entirely different from the island’s saltwater beaches. Tucked away from the coastline, Fresh Pond is a peaceful natural area popular with anglers, bird watchers, and anyone seeking a quiet retreat surrounded by woodland rather than sand. With hand-carry boat access and a shoreline that invites exploration, Fresh Pond is one of the island’s lesser-known gems.
Fishing at Fresh Pond
Fresh Pond is well known among local anglers for its variety of fish species. The pond supports healthy populations of largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, bluegill, pumpkinseed, and carp. Anglers may also find chain pickerel, yellow perch, eel, and white perch. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) manages the pond, and statewide freshwater fishing regulations apply. A valid New York State fishing license is required for anyone 16 and older.
Boating Access
Fresh Pond allows hand-carry boat launching — meaning canoes, kayaks, and small inflatables can be brought in and launched from the shoreline. There is no formal boat ramp, so motorized boats are not practical here. Paddling around the 15-acre pond is a wonderful way to spend a quiet morning, especially during early hours when wildlife is most active and the water is glassy calm.
Nature & Wildlife
The pond and its surrounding wetlands create habitat for a variety of wildlife. Great blue herons, painted turtles, dragonflies, and various waterfowl are commonly spotted. The wooded shoreline provides shade and a buffer from wind, making Fresh Pond feel sheltered and intimate compared to the open bay beaches. Spring and fall are particularly rewarding for birdwatchers, as migratory species pass through the area.
No Swimming
Fresh Pond is not a designated swimming area. The pond is primarily used for fishing, kayaking, and nature observation. For swimming, head to one of Shelter Island’s bay beaches: Crescent Beach, Wades Beach, or Shell Beach.
Parking & Access
A Town of Shelter Island parking permit is required to park at Fresh Pond during the restricted season (May 15–September 15). The same permit system applies as for the beaches — daily ($25), weekly ($70), monthly ($125), or seasonal ($250). Residents park free. Access is informal with limited shoreline parking. Best Times to Visit
Early morning is the prime time for both fishing and wildlife observation at Fresh Pond. The pond is accessible year-round, though fishing is best from spring through fall. Summer mornings before the heat sets in offer comfortable conditions and active fish. Fall brings beautiful foliage around the pond’s perimeter and excellent bass fishing.
What to Bring
For fishing, bring your rod, tackle, and a valid NY State fishing license. For paddling, a kayak or canoe plus a life vest. Insect repellent is important near the pond, especially in the warmer months. Binoculars and a field guide enhance wildlife observation. As always on Shelter Island, pack out everything you bring in.
