Crescent Beach
Shelter Island's Most Popular Beach & Swimming Destination
About Crescent Beach
Crescent Beach is the crown jewel of Shelter Island’s beaches, offering nearly half a mile of pristine sandy shoreline on the island’s northern side. Also known locally as Louis Beach, it’s the most developed and visited of the island’s beaches—and for good reason. With its stunning views facing Greenport and Southold across the bay, reliable lifeguard presence, convenient facilities, and nearby dining and lodging options, Crescent Beach is the ideal spot for a day of swimming, sunbathing, and enjoying the water.
Location & Access
Located on the north shore of Shelter Island, Crescent Beach is easily accessible from both ferry terminals. The beach sits adjacent to some of Shelter Island’s most beloved accommodations, including the historic Pridwin Hotel and Sunset Beach Hotel, making it a natural hub for visitors. Arriving by the North Ferry (from Greenport) puts you closest to the beach, while the South Ferry (from North Haven) is also just a short drive away.
Beach Features & Amenities
The sandy expanse at Crescent Beach spans approximately half a mile, providing plenty of room to find your perfect spot. During summer months, lifeguards are on duty from 10am to 5pm, making it a safe and supervised swimming destination. Restroom facilities are available on-site, and the beach’s developed infrastructure makes it family-friendly and accessible. While there are no showers directly at the beach, nearby hotels and accommodations cater to visitors who want to rinse off before heading into town.
Water Activities
The calm, protected waters make Crescent Beach perfect for traditional swimming, but the beach is also a hub for water sports. Kayak and paddleboard rentals are available nearby, allowing you to explore Shelter Island Sound and the surrounding waters. Whether you’re a seasoned paddler or trying these activities for the first time, the gentle bay waters offer an excellent playground for water recreation.
The July 4th Fireworks Celebration
Every Independence Day, Crescent Beach becomes the epicenter of Shelter Island’s holiday festivities. Thousands of residents and visitors gather on the beach to watch the spectacular July 4th fireworks display, which lights up the sky over the bay. It’s a beloved island tradition and one of the best reasons to visit during the summer season.
Parking & Permits
Parking at Crescent Beach requires a permit during the peak season from May 15 through September 15. Resident permits are free with proof of Shelter Island residency, while visitors can purchase daily ($25), weekly ($70), monthly ($125), or seasonal ($250) permits. Permits must be displayed on the left side of your rear bumper. For more information, visit the Town Clerk’s Office or check the town’s online permit system. Learn more about beach parking permits →
When to Visit
Crescent Beach is best visited during the warmer months, particularly June through September when lifeguards are on duty and the water is warmest. However, the beach is accessible year-round for those who enjoy quieter, cooler-season beachcombing and scenic walks. If you’re planning a visit, check the tide tables and weather forecast beforehand—summer afternoons can get quite busy, so arriving early in the day ensures you’ll find a good spot.
Nearby Dining & Lodging
The Crescent Beach area is surrounded by excellent dining options and accommodations. The Pridwin Hotel, located right on the beach, offers fine dining and waterfront views. Sunset Beach Hotel is another nearby option with food service and access to the beach. Shelter Island Heights, just a short distance away, has additional restaurants, shops, and services catering to visitors.
